A Company s Decision For Buy Navigation And Mapping Software
This scenario focuses on a companyââ¬â¢s decision to buy navigation and mapping software. The manager of the company approaches their IT manager, Patrick, who is supposed to recommend the best software. Although, Patrick does not commit any illegal offences, he shows through a number of actions that he violates professional ethics. R Bradburn states that ââ¬Ëbusiness ethicsâ⬠¦ is an oxymoronââ¬â¢ suggesting that the idea of business can never coincide with ethics because business in itself is too interested in expansion and selfish motives. All IT professionals should meet the criteria of the British Computer Society Code of Conduct. The BCS Code of Conduct states an employee should take into account ââ¬ËPublic Interests,ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËProfessional Competence and Integrity,ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËDuty to Relevant Authorityââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËDuty to the Profession.ââ¬â¢ The BCS Code of Conduct seems to be based on Deontological Ethics as it states that it is an employeeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ëdutyââ¬â¢ to fulfil these guidelines. Firstly, an interest in the effect on the public is vital to the maintenance of ethics throughout a company. In a sense, a company cannot function properly without the support of the public. Whereas, ââ¬ËProfessional Competence and Integrityââ¬â¢ indicates that an employee should try to gain as much knowledge as possible to influence growth and improvement. This also indicates that those seeking improvement within a company should encourage other employees to do the same.
